How is it like to be living in Singapore?

Living in Singapore has both it’s good points and bad points:)

The wonderful thing about living here is because it is run by a competent, reliable and uncorrupted government, and this has helped Singapore to become such a forward moving country. At the same time, the transport here is also efficient and smooth, and the amenities here are also just as good. Singapore is always constantly trying to improve things around (of course it would be a little more biased to the popular areas, so sometimes there are still places that are neglected) and the things here just gets better. It is bright, and it is safe, and it also has a fantastic education program. Singapore is governed by laws that helps it to maintain it’s position in being one of the most developed countries in the world, and the monetary help/campaigns/social benefits for the citizens are also very effective. Ruled out as a country with a weird Asian ‘spirit’ of kiasu-ism (& etc), a country with a strong social cohesion with different races, with a language that makes us stand out (Singlish), and also with it’s high demand for good quality throughout the country, it makes me proud to live in this lion city.

Of course, the downside of living in this fast moving society is the stress you face, and the high cost of living. The competition is increasing drastically and the things you learn are becoming a lot more difficult (I am comparing with what I’ve learnt in my Primary school back then, to what the students are learning now). Because of the high intake of foreign workers due to Singapore’s slow birth rate, you do get irritated at times seeing so much of them working and giving poor services, both attitude wise and professionalism wise, and not all Singaporeans here are exactly the most friendliest lot nor the most gracious lot, because of the way we have been brought up. In this quick paced city, Singaporeans are brought up always wanting to be the first, always wanting to win, always wanting to get as much as they can. The older you get, the more you realize how these people can be a big nuisance, but by then, it’d probably be a little too late. Facing these type of people in your day to day life..actually, facing A LOT of these middle-aged people who’re like that (because Singapore is facing an aging population), this pulls down the appeal of living here by a lot. Incidentally, the country is becoming technologically reliant and old traditions are slowly being lost, including old historical buildings that has to be teared down for developments, and that, is sadly because of our living space constraint, as we are too small, so I really wonder how long can we keep this up - artificially increasing our land size and clearing up more land. That is a struggle, alongside with the fact that Singapore has lack of natural resources and can only depend on other countries plus it’s tourism for it’s main source of income. I don’t know how Singapore will be like 20 - 40 years down the road. Would they still be able to keep up? Who would be our future generation running the country? Can they be just as good as the current one? These worries - to me - seem to only occur in Singapore.

Anyway, in all countries, a plus side and a minus side of living there always exists. It is just up to you to see which side holds a better reason for you to live there, or to migrate away. For me, despite all the words I’ve written in the third paragraph, there is a larger reason for me to feel proud of living here, and to love living here:)

Gosh I’ve written an essay hahaha! Sorry I took two days. I really wanted to find one time when I can properly sit down and think through to answer this.

Thanks for the question:)

Tell me. Ask me. Know me. Entertain me. Formspring me.
