I admire their bravery and courage to uphold the 2nd pillar of Islam even though Secularist schools in Singapore forbids anyone to perform prayers even if they do it discretely. I hope this would act as an inspiration to Muslim students from my college to still perform their salah even if any authority forbids them to do so. As long as there is a place spacious enough and it does not provide hindrance and inconvenience to Non-Muslims, it should not be an excuse for us to skip our prayers. The students above have displayed the value - “Don’t fear the creation, fear the Creator.” and May Allah bless them and May they continue to inspire Muslims who are studying in schools that forbids performing prayers even in private. Abu Huraira (r.a) narrates that once Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) asked his companions, “Do you think that dirt can remain on a person bathing five times a day in a brook running in front of his door?” ”No”, replied the compan­ions, ”No dirt can remain on his body.” Prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) remarked: ”So, exactly similar is the effect of salat offered five times a day. With the grace of Allah, it washes away all the sins”.(Bukhari, Muslim)”Salat is a pillar of the religion (Islam). He who establishes it, establishes religion; and he who destroys it, destroys religion.” [Tabrani] Nonetheless, I feel other religious groups should not let Secularist-hardliners of their school prevent them from practicing their religion. Singapore is a diversed country. Every Individual should not be afraid to practice their religion. Look at the positive note, it can promote further understanding between religious groups. Not only that, being aware of a religion’s practices will lead to Singaporeans appreciating the differences that exist among each other and embracing it. That is the key to Racial and Religious Harmony. Besides, I don’t think practicing religion can threaten the social fabric because everyday we re-new our promise don’t we? “Pledge ourselves as one united people. Regardless of Race, Language or RELIGION.” Just an opinion.
